KIOA Achieves Climate Action Leader Status and 100% Carbon Neutral Rating

VIVONNE BAY, South Australia, May 28, 2026 — Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action, the guided quad bike and adventure tour operator at Vivonne Bay, has achieved Climate Action Leader certification and confirmed 100% carbon neutral operations across all tours and activities. The certification, formalised in early 2026, marks the completion of a sustainability program that began when KIOA first pursued ecotourism accreditation with Ecotourism Australia in 2012.

“Kangaroo Island’s environment is the reason we exist,” said Brenton Davis, Director, Kangaroo Island Outdoor Action. “We have always operated with a low-impact approach, but achieving Climate Action Leader certification and carbon neutral status gives that commitment a documented, independently recognised structure. For guests who care about where their travel spend goes, we can now point to measurable outcomes rather than intentions.”

KIOA reached the Climate Action Leader standard after demonstrating that strategic climate change responses have been incorporated across all levels of business planning and operations. The certification, developed by Ecotourism Australia, recognises operators who have moved beyond awareness into active measurement, reduction, and offset of their carbon footprint.

Carbon Offsets Fund Native Habitat Restoration in the Coorong

KIOA works with Canopy, through Greening Australia, to offset its carbon emissions. The funds are directed to native tree and shrub planting at Morella Station near Salt Creek in South Australia’s Coorong region. The planting program delivers benefits across multiple ecological dimensions: rehabilitation of degraded farmland, increased biodiversity, salinity control, wildlife habitat creation, and improved landscape connectivity linking existing areas of native vegetation to facilitate the movement of animals and plant species through the region.

Guests booking a quad bike tour are also offered the option to contribute directly to offsetting the carbon emissions from their own tour at the point of booking. The opt-in contribution sits alongside KIOA’s existing offset commitments, allowing visitors to participate actively in the conservation outcomes their trip supports.

A Full Certification Stack Built Over Thirteen Years

The Climate Action Leader and carbon neutral status sit at the top of a certification stack that KIOA has built progressively since 2012. The operator holds Advanced Eco-Tourism certification, the highest tier of accreditation through Ecotourism Australia, which requires demonstrated best practice in resource use, environmental contribution, and community support. In 2022, KIOA also achieved Green Travel Leader status — a designation that recognises operators who have integrated environmental leadership across their entire operation rather than individual activities.

Full details of KIOA’s accreditation and certifications are published on the operator’s website.

Beyond environmental certifications, KIOA holds accreditation from the South Australian Tourism Commission and has accumulated an extensive award record. Industry recognitions include a silver medal at the 2012 South Australian Tourism Awards, gold medals for EcoTourism and Adventure Tourism across 2013, 2014, and 2015, TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence for ten consecutive years from 2013, and the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best 2021, ranked number one experience in Australia and sixth globally.

KIOA operates from 188 Jetty Road, Vivonne Bay, seven days a week from 9am, closing only on Christmas Day. The full activity program covering quad bike tours, kayaking, team building, and multi-activity packages is available through kioutdooraction.com.au. With winter now underway and the July school holiday window approaching, the operator is accepting bookings across all activity formats from its Vivonne Bay base.
